When Fate Brought Us to Wuyun: Chapter 4
Chapter Four: The Conversation Neither Woman Expected
They sat beside the river that evening.
Their children were playing nearby.
The sunset painted the water gold.
Laila finally spoke.
"My husband isn't cruel."
LÃn looked at her.
"Mine isn't either."
"That's what makes it difficult."
LÃn understood immediately.
Some wounds did not come from hatred.
Sometimes they came from absence.
From silence.
From a person who was physically present but emotionally missing when you needed them most.
Laila whispered,
"I kept thinking if I became a better wife, he would eventually stand beside me."
LÃn looked at her.
"I thought if I became a better daughter-in-law, his family would accept me."
They both laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was painfully familiar.
Laila turned toward her.
"What if we're making the same mistake?"
"What mistake?"
"Waiting for them to give us permission to live."
LÃn fell silent.
The river moved quietly beside them.
"What do you suggest?"
Laila looked at her unfinished sketchbook.
"We stop waiting."
