A Love Affair: Under the Cherry Blossom: A Love story
A Love Affair: Under the Cherry Blossom
Spring had painted Seoul in shades of pink.
For Bree Capadocia, the city felt like stepping into a dream she had somehow forgotten she had dreamed.
At thirty-three, Bree was an Italian-born fashion designer with an instinct for beauty that bordered on obsession. She noticed details other people walked past: the stitching on a stranger's coat, the way sunlight rested on silk, the movement of fabric in the wind, the quiet elegance of a woman adjusting her scarf before crossing a street.
She had travelled to South Korea for one reason: inspiration.
Her upcoming fashion collection needed something different. Something delicate yet powerful. Something that could capture movement, romance, and the strange beauty of imperfection.
And Seoul seemed to be whispering ideas everywhere she went.
That afternoon, Bree wandered beneath a long avenue of cherry blossom trees, her camera hanging loosely from one hand.
Her long, slightly wavy hair danced around her shoulders as the spring breeze passed through it. A few strands brushed across her face, already flushed from the afternoon sun. She wore a simple cream-colored dress beneath a light coat, allowing the soft colors of spring to become part of the picture herself.
Then the wind arrived.
A shower of cherry blossoms scattered through the air.
Bree stopped.
For a moment, the busy city disappeared.
She slowly raised her camera and began taking photographs.
Click.
Another.
Click.
She laughed quietly when a petal landed on the tip of her nose.
"Perfect," she whispered.
She reached up and caught another petal in her palm.
She didn't know that someone was watching her.
Several meters away stood Alex He.
Thirty-five. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Quietly confident.
Alex was a professional photographer whose work was known for capturing people when they weren't posing. He believed the best photographs happened in the seconds between expressions, when people forgot the camera existed.
He had come to the park that afternoon looking for a particular kind of light.
Instead, he found her.
The Italian woman beneath the cherry tree.
He lifted his camera almost instinctively.
Click.
The first photograph captured her looking upward.
Click.
The second caught the exact moment she smiled at a falling petal.
Click.
The third showed her standing completely still while hundreds of petals floated around her.
Alex lowered his camera.
For reasons he couldn't explain, he didn't take another picture.
He simply watched.
There was something about her presence that felt strangely out of place and yet completely right against the Korean spring.
Then Bree turned.
Their eyes met.
Alex immediately lowered his camera.
Bree raised an eyebrow.
"Did you just photograph me?"
Alex hesitated.
"Yes."
"Without asking?"
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"Yes."
Bree crossed her arms.
"And that's supposed to make me feel better?"
"No."
She stared at him.
He looked at the camera.
"But," he added, "the photographs are beautiful."
Bree tried not to smile.
"You photographers always say that."
"Only when it's true."
That earned him the smallest smile.
Neither of them knew it then, but that brief conversation beneath the cherry blossoms would become the first page of a story neither had planned to write.
Three Weeks Later
Bree's fashion project was moving forward.
She had finalized the concept, selected the fabrics, and begun searching for a photographer who could understand the mood she wanted.
Her Korean assistant placed a portfolio on the table.
"I think I found someone."
Bree opened it casually.
Then she froze.
The first photograph was familiar.
A woman beneath cherry blossoms.
Her.
Bree slowly turned the page.
Another photograph.
Her again.
She looked at the name printed beneath the portfolio.
Alex He.
"You're kidding me."
Her assistant looked confused.
"You know him?"
Bree closed the portfolio.
"Unfortunately."
The following morning, Alex walked into the studio for their first professional meeting.
He stopped when he saw Bree.
She stared back at him.
For a few seconds, neither spoke.
Then Alex smiled.
"Apparently, fate has a sense of humor."
Bree lifted an eyebrow.
"Or terrible timing."
"Could be both."
She tried to remain serious.
She failed.
And that was how it began.
Not with a grand confession.
Not with love at first sight.
But with photographs, arguments over lighting, stolen smiles between fashion fittings, coffee that somehow always became dinner, and conversations that lasted long after the studio lights had been switched off.
Alex discovered that Bree hated overly sweet coffee.
Bree discovered that Alex hummed when he was concentrating.
He learned that she spoke to herself whenever she was designing.
She learned that he pretended to be calm whenever he was nervous.
Their professional meetings slowly became longer.
Their conversations became more personal.
And somewhere between the first photograph and the hundredth shared cup of coffee, something began to bloom.
Just like the cherry blossoms.
Quietly.
Unexpectedly.
Beautifully.
One evening, after another exhausting day at the studio, Bree stepped outside.
A few late cherry blossoms were still clinging to the branches.
Alex stood beside her.
"You know," he said, "I never told you something."
"What?"
"The first photograph I took of you."
Bree smiled.
"I know. You took several."
"No. I mean the first one."
He reached into his camera bag and pulled out a small printed photograph.
It was the picture of Bree standing beneath the cherry blossom tree, her face turned toward the falling petals.
She stared at it.
"You kept it?"
Alex nodded.
"Why?"
He looked at her for a moment.
"Because that was the first time I saw you."
Bree's smile softened.
"No," she whispered. "That was the first time you photographed me."
Alex smiled.
"The first time I saw you was something else."
The wind moved gently through the trees.
A single cherry blossom landed between them.
Bree looked at Alex.
"And when was that?"
He stepped a little closer.
"That happened much later."
Her heart skipped.
"When?"
"When you stopped being the woman beneath the cherry tree..."
He paused.
"...and became the woman I started looking for everywhere."
For once, Bree had no clever answer.
She simply smiled.
Above them, the branches swayed in the evening breeze, releasing another delicate shower of pink petals.
And beneath the cherry blossoms, their little love story finally began.
