Your Mind Is Playing Tricks: How Perception Shapes the Life You Live
Discover how perception and beliefs quietly shape your decisions, relationships, and reality. Learn why questioning assumptions can transform the way you see the world.
Hello everyone,
Hope you're all doing well. 🌿
Lately, there's been something I just can't stop thinking about: perception and beliefs.
They're two of the most powerful forces shaping our lives, yet we rarely stop to question them.
So, what is perception?
Imagine there's a green apple sitting on a table. Someone once told you that green apples are sour, or maybe you had one sour green apple years ago. From that moment on, every time you see a green apple, your mind immediately labels it as "sour." You don't even think twice before walking past it.
But what if this particular apple is sweet? Maybe it's even sweeter than the red ones.
The only way you'd ever know is if you were willing to take a bite.
That's how perception works. It helps our brain make quick decisions based on past experiences, but it doesn't always reflect reality.
Beliefs often grow from those perceptions.
For example, imagine you witness a fight in broad daylight. Your first instinct might be to assume the person getting beaten is the victim. It feels obvious.
But what if that person was actually the one who started the violence? What if you're only seeing the last few seconds of a much longer story?
Reality is often more complicated than the tiny window we happen to witness.
The fascinating part is that once our perceptions and beliefs are formed, we rarely challenge them. Instead, we gather evidence that supports what we already think, while quietly ignoring anything that contradicts it.
And if I'm being completely honest, many of the opinions we hold aren't formed solely because we've deeply examined the facts. A surprising number of them exist because they're socially accepted. We tend to believe what our family, friends, culture, or community believe, often without realizing it.
Maybe that's why growth begins with a simple question:
"What if I don't have the whole picture?"
Questioning our perceptions doesn't mean abandoning our values. It simply means remaining open to learning, understanding, and discovering that there may be another side we haven't considered yet.
Sometimes, all it takes is one conversation, one experience, or one "green apple" to change the way we see the world.
Until then,
take care of yourselves,
get plenty of rest,
and don't be afraid to challenge a belief every once in a while.
Adios. 👋
