What If the Brain Doesn't Create Consciousness?

A gentle conversation about the strangest thing we experience: being alive

Let me ask you something today that sounds simple but is actually rather difficult.

What makes you conscious?

Don't worry. I'm not going to ask you to write an essay about it.

Just sit with the question for a moment.

Right now, you are reading these words.

You can see them.

You can understand them.

Perhaps you're thinking about something I said.

Maybe you're wondering where I'm going with this.

But here's the strange part:

Who is doing the experiencing?

We usually give a very quick answer.

"My brain."

And that's a perfectly reasonable answer.

After all, your brain is involved in almost everything you experience. It helps you see, hear, remember, speak, move, feel emotions and make decisions.

But scientists and philosophers have been wrestling with a much deeper question:

Does the brain actually create consciousness, or does something else happen that we don't yet understand?

And today, I don't want us to rush toward an answer.

I want us to explore the question together.


First, What Do We Mean by Consciousness?

Let's keep this simple.

Consciousness is basically your experience of being aware.

You know that you're here.

You can feel the chair beneath you.

You can hear sounds around you.

You can remember yesterday.

You can imagine tomorrow.

You can feel happiness, sadness, fear, curiosity or love.

And perhaps most importantly, you don't simply process these things.

You experience them.

Think about the color red.

Your eyes receive light.

Your brain processes information.

But you don't experience a mathematical equation.

You experience red.

Think about music.

Sound waves enter your ears.

Your brain processes them.

But you don't experience air vibrations.

You experience music.

And think about pain.

Your body sends signals to your brain.

But you don't simply know that something has happened.

You feel it.

That little word, feel, is where the mystery begins.


Your Brain Is Extraordinary

Imagine for a moment that I could shrink you down and take you inside your brain.

What would you see?

Billions of neurons communicating with one another.

Tiny electrical signals moving around.

Chemical messengers being released.

Different areas communicating.

Networks switching on and off.

It would probably look like the busiest city you've ever seen.

And yet somehow, all of this activity becomes:

"I am sitting here."

"I am hungry."

"I miss my friend."

"That song reminds me of childhood."

"I'm worried about tomorrow."

How does electrical and chemical activity become an inner life?

That is the puzzle.


Think About an Orchestra

Let me give you an example.

Imagine an orchestra.

You have violins.

Cellos.

Drums.

Flutes.

Pianos.

Each musician is doing something different.

But when they work together, something beautiful appears.

Music.

You cannot point to one violin and say,

"There is the entire symphony."

The symphony comes from the orchestra working together.

Some scientists think consciousness may be somewhat like this.

Perhaps no single neuron is conscious.

But billions of neurons communicating in incredibly complex ways might produce consciousness.

In other words:

Maybe consciousness isn't sitting inside one part of your brain.

Maybe it emerges from the activity of the whole system.

That's a fascinating idea.

But there is still a question waiting for us.

Why does that activity feel like anything at all?


The Question Behind the Question

Suppose one day scientists completely understand every neuron in your brain.

They know what every cell does.

They know how every electrical signal moves.

They understand how memories are stored.

They can predict what happens when you see a flower.

They understand exactly which brain networks become active when you hear your favorite song.

Would we then understand consciousness?

Maybe.

But perhaps one question would still remain.

Why does the flower look beautiful?

Why does the song move you?

Why does losing someone hurt?

Why does a hug from someone you love feel comforting?

We can describe what the brain is doing.

But describing the machinery doesn't automatically explain the experience.

And that is one of the deepest mysteries in neuroscience.


Could the Brain Be a Filter Instead?

Now I'm going to introduce an idea that is much more speculative.

Some philosophers and thinkers have wondered whether the brain might not create consciousness but instead somehow filter or organize it.

Think about a radio.

A radio receives a signal and turns it into sound.

If you damage the radio, you don't hear the music.

But the radio didn't necessarily create the broadcast.

Now, some people have used this analogy to wonder whether the brain might work in a similar way.

It's an interesting thought.

But please remember this distinction:

An interesting idea isn't automatically scientific evidence.

We currently have strong evidence that conscious experience depends profoundly on the functioning brain.

We do not have established scientific evidence that consciousness exists independently of the brain like a radio signal exists independently of a radio.

So this is a philosophical possibility, not a settled scientific conclusion.

And that's okay.

We can explore an idea without pretending we've proven it.


What About the "Self"?

Now let's make this even more interesting.

Who are you?

Don't give me your name.

That's your name.

Don't give me your job.

That's your occupation.

Don't give me your age.

That's a number.

I'm asking:

What is the "you" experiencing all of this?

Your body changes.

Your opinions change.

Your memories change.

Your personality develops.

The child you were ten years ago isn't exactly the person sitting here today.

And yet you feel like the same person.

Some researchers and philosophers therefore think that the self may not be a permanent object inside the brain.

Perhaps it is a continuously changing process.

Your memories.

Your body.

Your emotions.

Your relationships.

Your experiences.

Your expectations.

All of these pieces come together to create your sense of me.

Maybe you aren't a finished product.

Maybe you are a story your brain and body are constantly writing.


Dreams Make Everything Stranger

Have you ever had a dream so realistic that you woke up confused?

For a few minutes, your dream felt completely real.

You were somewhere else.

You saw people.

You heard voices.

You experienced emotions.

Sometimes you even wake up with your heart racing.

But where was that entire world?

There wasn't actually a second bedroom.

There wasn't another city.

There wasn't another version of you wandering around somewhere.

Your brain created an entire experience while your body was lying in bed.

Dreams remind us just how powerful the brain is at constructing our experience of reality.

And they leave us with another fascinating question:

If the brain can create a world while we sleep, what exactly is it doing while we're awake?


Does That Mean Consciousness Isn't Real?

Absolutely not.

This is important.

Just because we don't completely understand consciousness doesn't mean it isn't real.

You may not understand how a refrigerator works.

You're still going to notice when your ice cream melts.

Similarly, science doesn't need to have solved every mystery about consciousness for us to know that conscious experience exists.

You are experiencing this moment right now.

That's real.

The mystery is how it happens.


And Maybe We Should Be Comfortable Saying "We Don't Know Yet"

Students sometimes think science is a giant book containing all the answers.

It isn't.

Science is also a collection of questions.

Some have answers.

Some have partial answers.

And some are still waiting.

Consciousness is one of those enormous questions.

We know that brain activity and conscious experience are deeply connected.

We know that changing the brain can change consciousness.

We know that sleep, anesthesia, injury, drugs and neurological conditions can dramatically alter conscious experience.

But we don't yet have one universally accepted explanation for exactly why subjective experience exists.

And I think that's a beautiful lesson in itself.

You don't have to be embarrassed by saying:

"I don't know."

Sometimes I don't know is where the most interesting learning begins.


So, Does the Brain Create Consciousness?

The honest answer is:

We don't know with complete certainty.

The leading scientific approaches generally investigate consciousness as something arising from or depending on brain processes.

There are also philosophical ideas suggesting consciousness might be more fundamental than we currently understand.

But those ideas remain debated and unproven.

So rather than choosing a dramatic answer, let's keep our curiosity alive.

Maybe consciousness emerges from the brain.

Maybe our current understanding of the brain is incomplete.

Maybe one day neuroscience will explain the entire process.

Or maybe the question will force us to rethink what we mean by brain, mind, self, and even reality.

We simply don't know yet.


One Last Thought Before You Leave

The next time you sit quietly by yourself, try something very simple.

Notice your surroundings.

Listen to a sound.

Look at your hands.

Take a breath.

Then ask yourself:

"How strange is it that I am here, experiencing this moment?"

Not what are you thinking.

Not what are you doing.

But simply:

How am I experiencing being me?

We spend so much of our lives trying to understand the outside world.

We study planets.

We examine cells.

We build machines.

We explore oceans.

We send spacecraft into space.

And yet the greatest mystery may be much closer.

It is sitting behind your eyes.

Reading these words.

Wondering about itself.

Your brain may be creating consciousness.

It may be giving rise to it through billions of tiny interactions.

Or perhaps there is still something about consciousness that we haven't discovered.

But here's what I want you to take away from our little conversation:

Not knowing doesn't make the question meaningless.

It makes the question worth asking.

And perhaps that is one of the most extraordinary things about being human.

We are conscious enough to wonder about consciousness.

We are alive enough to ask what life means.

And somehow, inside this remarkable universe, matter has become capable of looking at itself and asking:

"Who am I?"
