of my Heart: Resilience After Broken
Promises: How Love and Strength Grow Beyond Marriage Expectations in Asia
In Asia, love marriages aren’t forbidden anymore, but
arranged marriages are still preferred by parents—it’s almost a natural
instinct, believing they are handing their child into better care. And yes, in
many cases, arranged marriages do bring stability and companionship. But there
are also stories, like mine, where things don’t fall into place, and where both
love and arrangement sometimes fail to give the “right partner.”
For me, it was marriage at 30—already late by society’s
timeline, where the buzzing whispers of nosy neighbors and aunties never let
you forget how “something must be wrong” if you’re not yet married. And when it
did finally happen, I thought I had crossed the finish line. I thought I was
one of the lucky ones.
But life, as it often does, had other plans. The temporary
honeymoon of goodwill faded, and suddenly, silent tears became my only
confidant. Nights blurred into days of endurance, and love—the kind I had
dreamed of—remained a stranger at my door.
Yet, resilience is a seed planted in the darkest soil.
Slowly, with every tear, I grew roots of strength. Even though I am not
financially strong, I discovered a wealth of courage I didn’t know existed. I
started building quiet strategies for something greater: a better future where
my voice is not silenced, where my heart is not broken by expectation, and
where my worth is not measured by marital status.
I am still learning, still stumbling, still rising. But
today, I know this: sometimes the cruelest chapters of our lives become the
strongest foundation of who we are becoming. Love may not have bloomed the way
I once imagined, but resilience did—and in its own quiet, steady way, it is
teaching me to fall in love again, this time with myself and with the hope of a
brighter tomorrow.
