That City Inside the Ocean
The City Beneath the Glass Sea
I had heard the sailors’ whispers for years — of a city that sleeps beneath the deep blue ocean, guarded not by stone or steel, but by a wall of pure mirror. A mirror that reflects not your face, but your truth.
The dive was not easy. The water grew darker, heavier, until sunlight became a faint, trembling thread above me. And then — I saw it.
A colossal dome of shimmering glass stretched across the seafloor, so clear that the vast ocean pressed against it like a jeweled cloak. On the other side, the city pulsed with gold light. Streets paved in emerald glistened beneath the movement of strange, elegant beings — creatures with eyes like liquid silver, their movements slow and deliberate, as if time itself bent to their will.
Pearls as large as my fist lined the pathways. Coral towers spiraled into the dome’s upper reaches, encrusted with sapphires. Schools of fish swam lazily within, safe from the predators outside. Even the water inside seemed… different — brighter, as if it were made from liquid light.
I pressed my hand against the mirror wall. It was warm. For a heartbeat, my reflection flickered — and I saw not myself, but… someone else, looking back at me. Someone who smiled as if they knew me.
A shadow passed overhead. Not outside, but inside the dome. Massive. Slow. Watching.
Then, from within the city, a ripple spread through the water, and the silver-eyed creatures all turned to face me. In unison.
Something moved toward me — fast.
And then—
The mirror shimmered, as if inviting me in.
Tell me… what do you think the essence of this city is? And if you stepped through that wall… what would be waiting for you on the other side?
